Itanagar, October 23: Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh is all set to host the fourth edition of the Tawang Marathon on October 24. The high-altitude running event will bring together runners for a sporting challenge amid the scenic Himalayan mountains.
The marathon will be held at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Stadium in Tawang. Organised under the aegis of the Arunachal Pradesh government and the Indian Army, the event is managed by VAS Coreworks LLP.
The marathon aims to promote running, adventure sports and tourism in the northeastern state. Tawang’s mountain landscape and distinctive cultural heritage make it an attractive destination for visitors and sports enthusiasts.

Four Race Categories for Participants
The Tawang Marathon 2026 will feature four race categories to accommodate runners with different levels of endurance and experience.
- Full Marathon: 42.195 km
- Half Marathon: 21.0975 km
- 10 km Timed Run
- 5 km Timed Run
According to the official event schedule, the full marathon will start at 5.30 am, followed by the half marathon at 5.45 am. The 10 km run will begin at 6.10 am, while the 5 km run is scheduled for 7 am.
The starting and finishing point for all four categories will be the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Stadium.
Running at High Altitude
One of the main features of the Tawang Marathon is its high-altitude setting. Running in mountainous conditions can be physically demanding because lower oxygen availability may affect endurance and performance.
The organisers advise participants to be physically fit and allow adequate time to acclimatise to the local conditions. Runners are also required to follow the instructions issued by race officials and event organisers.
Rs 60.10 Lakh in Total Prize Money
The Tawang Marathon 2026 has announced a total prize pool of Rs 60.10 lakh across its four race categories.
Prize money is available for male and female participants in the respective open and age-group categories, subject to the event’s eligibility requirements and verification of results.
The event is expected to strengthen Tawang’s profile as a destination for adventure and sports tourism. The arrival of runners and accompanying visitors could also create business opportunities for local hotels, homestays, transport operators and other tourism-related services.
However, the actual economic impact will depend on visitor numbers, spending and the benefits received by local businesses.
Promoting Arunachal Pradesh Through Sports Tourism
Arunachal Pradesh is known for its mountains, monasteries, vibrant villages and diverse cultural traditions. Events such as the Tawang Marathon offer an opportunity to showcase these attractions to visitors from different parts of India and abroad.
The fourth edition of the marathon combines competitive running with the wider objective of promoting Tawang as a destination for adventure, outdoor activities and tourism.
As the event gets underway on October 24, runners will take on the challenge of racing in the Himalayan landscape while contributing to the growing visibility of sports tourism in Northeast India.
