Guwahati, November 2: Assam STF financial fraud arrests have led to six persons being held for their alleged involvement in an organised financial fraud syndicate operating through mule bank accounts.
An Assam Police spokesperson said on Monday that the arrested persons are also suspected to have links with Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs).
The arrests followed a tip-off from central agencies, including Military Intelligence (MI), Gajraj Corps, Tezpur.
Following the tip-off, STF Assam registered a case and initiated an investigation in the matter. The complaint was lodged at the STF Police Station by Sonitpur Police, the spokesperson said.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that an SBI bank account belonging to FIR-named accused Marjina Begum of Ganesh Nagar, PS-Chandmari, Guwahati, had received credits amounting to lakhs of rupees within just 47 days, between 22 June and 5 August 2026. It was further observed that the amounts credited to the account were withdrawn almost immediately after each deposit, indicating a suspicious pattern of financial transactions,” he said.
Further investigation revealed the alleged involvement of Mofijul Haque (22) and Himangshu Das (19), both residents of Bamunimaidan, under Chandmari Police Station, Guwahati, in suspicious financial transactions linked to the said account.
Preliminary findings also indicated a suspected connection with a Pakistan Intelligence Operative (PIO), he added.
Accordingly, STF Assam launched an operation on 28 October 2026 and arrested all three accused persons. Mobile phones and incriminating documents were recovered from their possession.
“During interrogation, Mofijul Haque and Himangshu Das disclosed the names of several other persons allegedly associated with the racket. Acting on these leads, STF Assam continued its operation and arrested three more accused persons on subsequent dates.
During the operations, mobile phones, laptops, electronic gadgets, bank passbooks, ATM cards and various incriminating documents were recovered and seized from the possession of the arrested accused persons.
Investigation conducted so far indicates that the organised financial fraud syndicate has allegedly been operating across different parts of the country for approximately two years, using multiple mule bank accounts to facilitate fraudulent financial transactions.
Preliminary findings further suggest that the racket has allegedly defrauded victims of several crores of rupees, while its suspected mastermind is believed to be coordinating and controlling the activities of other members from outside Assam.
STF Assam is continuing its investigation to identify and apprehend the remaining members of the syndicate, trace the flow of fraudulent funds, identify additional mule bank accounts, dismantle the organised financial fraud network and ascertain the nature and extent of any involvement of Pakistan-based Intelligence Operatives or other anti-national elements in the suspected nexus.”
