Guwahati, October 27, 2026: A deadly firing incident at Hotel Bilas Inn in the Bora Service area of Guwahati has triggered widespread shock across Assam. Five people were killed and one person was injured after six people sustained gunshot wounds in the incident, which took place at around 9 pm on Monday. Police have arrested the accused, Ghanakanta Gogoi, and seized the pistol allegedly used in the shooting.
Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta shared these details while speaking to the media. According to him, the police apprehended the accused within about an hour of the incident. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which is still in its preliminary stages of investigation.

Lease Agreement Dispute Suspected Behind Firing
Police suspect that a long-running dispute over the hotel’s lease agreement and its terms may have led to the shooting. According to Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta, the accused had taken Hotel Bilas Inn on lease from the owner’s side, and around a year had passed since the lease began.
Preliminary findings indicate that disagreements over the lease terms had continued between the parties. Police are investigating whether this dispute was the direct cause of the firing. The exact circumstances and motive behind the incident are yet to be established through the ongoing investigation.

Victims Linked to Hotel Owner’s Family
The police commissioner said the people killed and injured in the shooting were associated with the hotel’s owner’s side. They included family members and people known to the family from their village.
Family members of those affected were arriving at the scene, while the necessary procedures were being carried out. Mahanta also said that, as per the information available to police at that stage, no First Information Report (FIR) had previously been filed with the police in connection with the dispute.
Pistol Seized, Forensic Investigation Underway
Police have seized the pistol allegedly used in the firing. The police commissioner stated that the pistol was licensed, while also saying that the relevant documents would be examined as part of the investigation.
A forensic team and investigating officers are examining the crime scene and collecting evidence. Police are also scrutinising documents and other relevant information to establish the sequence of events and determine the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Police Urge Media to Verify Information
Mahanta said only a few hours had passed since the incident and that the investigation was still at an early stage. He urged the media not to publish information without cross-checking and verifying its accuracy.
The police commissioner expressed hope that a clearer picture of the incident would emerge by Tuesday as the investigation progressed. Police are continuing their scientific investigation to establish the facts and bring the case to a logical conclusion.
The incident has raised serious questions about the dispute surrounding the hotel’s lease, but investigators are yet to establish the complete sequence of events and the precise motive behind the shooting.
