Family suspects foul play behind death

Even as the preliminary report of post mortem of Himashree Boro by the Andhra Pradesh police have ruled out any physical or sexual violence, the family members of the victim still suspect foul play behind the disappearance and subsequent death of the 20-year-old student from Assam.

A resident of Bonda area in Guwahati, Himashree was a student of B Borooah College in the town and had travelled to Visakhapatnam on August 13 with a dance troupe for a cultural event. She boarded the Dibrugarh-bound Vivek Express on October 6 on a general compartment ticket to return to Assam but went missing during the journey. Later her body was recovered near railway tracks between Dusi and Ponduru stations in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district, police said.

“There are several mysteries around the circumstances leading to her death. Soon after she boarded the train, Himashree had called her friend Jyoti and said that she was among a group of passengers who are making lewd comments about her. Himashree had also told Jyoti that she cannot go much further in the compartment. Jyoti told her that she will lodge a complaint with the Railway security and asked her to stay put till the next station,” said Himashree’s sister at their residence in Bonda.

“Himashree had also recorded a video of her surrounding in her mobile phone and sent it to Jyoti. Soon after that her mobile went switched off triggering the alarm,” she said adding that if the Railway police had shown some alertness after their complaint, probably she would be alive today.

It may be mentioned here that Himashree’s friend Jyoti had lodged a complaint with the 139 railway helpline number after finding Himashree’s phone switched off. Jyoti also informed Himashree’s parents that something might have happened with Himashree as her phone went switched off. Following this, Himashree’s parents have approached the local police station in Guwahati and the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Paltan Bazar in Guwahati over the incident.

“I wish the GRP had acted little fast, my daughter would be alive today,” said Moneswari, the grieving mother of Himashree Boro. “The GRP told us that they would act immediately and check the CCTV footage in all the railway stations along the route from Visakhapatnam to Guwahati. However, they could recover the bag of Himashree only when the train reached Paltan Bazar Railway Station. It indicated that they had done nothing,” she said while breaking down.

It may be mentioned here that a team of police from Andhra Pradesh had visited Assam’s Panikhaiti Police Station on Tuesday and recorded statements from the family members of Himashree. The team gathered information from Boro’s mother and other relatives as part of the ongoing investigation into her death.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had visited Himashree’s residence at Bonda Chapaidong in Guwahati on Monday and expressed his condolences. The Assam Chief Minister had also written to the Union Railway Minister and the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, seeking a thorough investigation into the case.
