Guwahati, October 30: Fresh details about Ghanakanta Gogoi, the accused in the Hotel Bilas Inn shooting incident in Guwahati that left five people dead, have emerged during the police investigation. His alleged business dealings, financial transactions, recovery of documents from his rented accommodation and links with a news portal named ‘GK NEWS’ have brought several aspects of his past into focus.
Gogoi, who is currently in police custody, has also reportedly displayed unusual behaviour during questioning. According to reports, he has at times avoided answering investigators’ questions and refused to speak. Police are examining his conduct as part of the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, several documents recovered from his rented accommodation in Guwahati have reportedly provided investigators with fresh leads about his financial and business activities. His loan records, business transactions, luxury vehicle and alleged involvement in running a news portal are now among the key areas of interest.
Documents Recovered from Rented Accommodation
Police conducted a search at Gogoi’s rented accommodation in Saukuchi and recovered several important documents. The papers reportedly include records related to loans and businesses taken on lease.
Investigators are examining these documents to establish details of his financial transactions, business activities and other possible connections.
Another issue troubling the investigation team is the key to Gogoi’s luxury vehicle, which has reportedly not yet been recovered. Despite the search operation, police have not been able to locate it.
The absence of the vehicle key has also complicated efforts to move the vehicle from the rented premises. Police may consider using a crane to remove it if required.
Meanwhile, several items used by Gogoi, along with samples collected during the investigation, have reportedly been sent for forensic examination. Investigators are awaiting findings that could provide further leads in the case.
Past Business Dealings Under Scanner
Gogoi’s previous business activities have also come under scrutiny following the Hotel Bilas Inn incident.
Several questions have surfaced regarding his financial dealings, loans and vehicle-related transactions. Allegations of financial irregularities and cheating involving people with whom he had business relationships have also come to light.
Reports have referred to business connections and financial dealings involving individuals from Nagaland, Dibrugarh and Sivasagar.
Investigators are now examining Gogoi’s previous business transactions and financial activities to establish the nature of his dealings and verify the complaints made against him.
The police investigation is also expected to examine whether any of these earlier financial disputes have a connection with the events that led to the Hotel Bilas Inn shooting.
Wife Jonmoni Gogoi May Be Questioned by SIT
Gogoi’s wife, Jonmoni Gogoi, has also come into focus during the investigation.
According to reports, Jonmoni left Guwahati on the night of the incident. The Dibrugarh Police reportedly traced her nearly three days later.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) may question her as part of the ongoing investigation. Investigators are interested in gathering information about Gogoi’s business activities, financial dealings and other aspects of his personal and professional life.
Her statement could help investigators establish further details about Gogoi’s activities and the documents recovered from his rented accommodation.
Ghanakanta Gogoi Ran a News Portal Named ‘GK NEWS’
Another surprising aspect of Ghanakanta Gogoi’s past is his involvement in the media business. According to information available, he had opened a news portal named ‘GK NEWS’ in his own name.
Gogoi had also employed several people to work for the portal. However, the employees were not paid their salaries. The portal was eventually shut down.
After launching the portal, Gogoi also put a ‘PRESS’ marking on his vehicle and used it while moving around.
His news portal, the unpaid salaries of its employees and the PRESS marking on his vehicle have now brought another side of his past into focus.
Investigation into the Deaths of Five People Continues
It may be recalled that five people were killed and another person was injured in a shooting incident at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati on October 26.
The incident reportedly followed a dispute over the hotel’s lease and management between the owners and Ghanakanta Gogoi, who had taken the property on lease.
According to preliminary police findings, Gogoi had taken the hotel on a five-year lease on September 10, 2025, at a monthly rent of approximately Rs 1.8 lakh.
Differences reportedly developed between the two sides over the hotel’s management and various facilities. On October 26, a meeting was scheduled to resolve the dispute. However, an argument reportedly escalated into a violent confrontation, followed by the shooting.
Four members of the hotel owner’s family and one employee lost their lives in the incident.
Gogoi was arrested following the shooting and is currently in police custody. A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the case.
As the investigation progresses, police are examining Gogoi’s previous business activities, financial transactions, documents recovered from his rented accommodation, his luxury vehicle and his association with the ‘GK NEWS’ portal.
The findings of the investigation are expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the Hotel Bilas Inn shooting and the various aspects of Gogoi’s past.
