Guwahati, October 30: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Electronics Private Limited to strengthen semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) education, skill development and research in India.
The collaboration will facilitate the establishment of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at the IIT Guwahati campus, with a focus on developing industry-ready talent and advancing research in semiconductor packaging technologies.
The initiative is expected to strengthen the semiconductor talent ecosystem in Assam and the Northeast by creating new educational and training opportunities for students from engineering colleges, polytechnics and other educational institutions.
With the semiconductor industry witnessing a growing demand for skilled professionals, the partnership aims to develop specialised educational and training programmes aligned with industry requirements.
IIT Guwahati and Tata Electronics Sign MoU on October 23
The MoU was formalised on October 23, 2026, at the IIT Guwahati campus. It was signed by Prof. Rohit Sinha, Dean, Research and Development (R&D), IIT Guwahati, and Mr. Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Tata Electronics Private Limited.
The signing ceremony was attended by several senior representatives from both institutions, including Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati; Prof. Sukumar Nandi, Dean, Administration, IIT Guwahati; Ms. Vaswati Sarma Borthakur of Tata Electronics; Mr. Erwin Estepa; and Mr. J M Nowful.
Centre of Excellence to Focus on Semiconductor Packaging
A key component of the IIT Guwahati-Tata Electronics partnership will be the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at the IIT Guwahati campus.
The centre will focus on semiconductor packaging technologies, specialised training and research, while helping develop a skilled workforce capable of meeting the requirements of the growing semiconductor industry.
Under the collaboration framework, IIT Guwahati will lead the development and delivery of educational programmes. These will include diploma-level training programmes and B.Tech-level engineering programmes in semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP).
The programmes will also incorporate practical, hands-on training as an integral part of the curriculum, allowing students to gain exposure to the technical aspects of semiconductor packaging.
Semiconductor Training Opportunities for Students Across Assam and Northeast
The collaboration is also aimed at expanding access to semiconductor-focused education beyond the IIT Guwahati campus.
As part of the initiative, IIT Guwahati and Tata Electronics will identify engineering colleges, universities and polytechnics that can participate in the programme.
The partnership will facilitate hands-on training opportunities for students from partner engineering colleges, polytechnics and other educational institutions.
Other key areas of collaboration include:
- Joint development of industry-relevant course content.
- Preparation of educational resources for semiconductor-focused learning.
- Development of specialised training programmes.
- Identification of engineering colleges, universities and polytechnics for expanding access to semiconductor education.
- Hands-on training opportunities for students from partner institutions.
- Development and delivery of diploma-level and B.Tech-level programmes in semiconductor ATMP.
Through these initiatives, the partnership aims to create a stronger regional talent pipeline and make specialised semiconductor education more accessible to students across Assam and the Northeast.
IIT Guwahati Director Highlights Industry-Academia Collaboration
Speaking about the collaboration with Tata Electronics Private Limited, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, said the initiative aims to connect academic institutions, industry and students through specialised education, practical training and collaborative research.
He said, “This initiative aims to connect academic institutions, industry and students through specialised education, practical training and collaborative research. By identifying relevant institutions across Assam and supporting the development of semiconductor-focused curricula, the collaboration will broaden access to specialised technical education and strengthen the regional talent pipeline.”
A Step Towards Strengthening India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem
The partnership between IIT Guwahati and Tata Electronics marks an important step towards strengthening India’s semiconductor education, research and workforce development ecosystem.
By combining academic expertise with industry requirements, the collaboration seeks to prepare students for emerging opportunities in semiconductor technologies, particularly in the specialised field of Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging.
For Assam and the wider Northeast region, the establishment of the Centre of Excellence and the expansion of semiconductor-focused training programmes could open up new avenues for technical education, skill development and industry-oriented learning.
The initiative also reflects the growing importance of collaboration between educational institutions and industry in developing the specialised workforce required to support India’s ambition of becoming a global leader in semiconductor technology.
