Guwahati, October 27: Indian weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu will lead India’s challenge at the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships, which begin in Ningbo, China, on Tuesday. The competition will run until November 8 at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre, bringing together leading weightlifters from around the world.
The championship is particularly important for Chanu as she prepares for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. She will compete in the women’s 53kg category, marking a new phase in her Olympic journey after years of competing in the lower weight categories.
The event is also one of the first qualifying competitions in the qualification process for weightlifting at the LA 2028 Olympics.
Mirabai Chanu to Compete in the 53kg Category
One of the biggest talking points ahead of the championship is Chanu’s move to the women’s 53kg category.
The Manipuri weightlifter won a silver medal in the women’s 49kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She also competed in the same weight category at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
However, the 49kg category is not part of the women’s weightlifting programme for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The 53kg category will be the lightest women’s weight class at the next Olympic Games.
The change makes the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships an important opportunity for Chanu to test herself against international competitors in her new Olympic weight category.
According to the competition entry list, Chanu is scheduled to compete on October 29. She has been placed in Group B of the women’s 53kg event.
A Champion with an Impressive International Record
Mirabai Chanu has established herself as one of India’s leading weightlifters through her performances at major international competitions.
Her biggest career achievement came at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she won the silver medal in the women’s 49kg category. She became one of India’s most prominent faces in Olympic weightlifting.
Chanu also won gold in the women’s 48kg category at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships. At the 2022 World Championships, she secured silver in the 49kg category.
She continued to compete at the highest level in subsequent years, winning silver at the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships in the 48kg category.
At the 2026 Asian Games, she also secured a silver medal in the 49kg category, adding to her international achievements.
Her experience at the Olympic Games, World Championships and Asian Games will be important as she adapts to the demands of the 53kg category.
India’s Weightlifting Squad for the Championship
India will have several lifters competing across different weight categories at the World Weightlifting Championships.
The Indian women’s contingent includes Mirabai Chanu and Gyaneshwari Yadav in the 53kg category, along with Usha and Nirupama Devi Seram in the 61kg category.
Lovepreet Singh is listed in the men’s super-heavyweight category of over 110kg.
The Indian team will look to gain valuable international competition experience while assessing its preparation for the upcoming Olympic qualification cycle.
Why the Championships Matter for LA 2028
The 2026 World Weightlifting Championships are significant because they form part of the qualification pathway for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Under the Olympic qualification system, weightlifters must compete in designated events and record valid totals in their chosen Olympic weight categories to remain eligible for the Olympic Qualification Ranking.
A total in weightlifting is calculated by adding an athlete’s best successful lift in the snatch and the best successful lift in the clean and jerk.
The Olympic qualification system considers results from two qualification periods. Athletes must meet the participation requirements and accumulate qualifying results in the same Olympic weight category.
At the end of the process, the top eight eligible athletes in each Olympic weight category in the final Olympic Qualification Ranking will secure quota places, subject to the applicable qualification rules.
For Chanu, the move to 53kg means that consistency, successful lifts and competitive totals in the new category will be crucial over the coming qualification period.
However, participation in the World Championships alone does not guarantee Olympic qualification.
All Eyes on Chanu’s Performance in Ningbo
The World Weightlifting Championships will offer an early indication of how Mirabai Chanu is adapting to the 53kg category ahead of the LA 2028 Olympics.
Her performance will be closely watched by Indian sports fans, particularly because she has already demonstrated her ability to win medals at the highest level.
The competition will also provide an opportunity for other Indian weightlifters to test their strength against international opponents.
For Chanu, the immediate challenge is to produce a strong performance in Ningbo. Her longer-term objective will be to maintain consistency in the new Olympic weight category and strengthen her position in the qualification process for Los Angeles 2028.
